Housing crisis in Tasmania

Tasmania is in the midst of a housing crisis, with data showing the state has among the least affordable rents in the country¹.

More than 120,000 Tasmanians, or approximately 23% of the state's population, live below the poverty line. As housing costs rise, it gets tougher for Tasmanians earning low and moderate incomes to find affordable housing². 4,453 households are on the waiting list for social housing, a number that's doubled over the last 8 years³.

This organisation is experiencing unprecedented demand for its services, with more and more people requesting help, including people in paid work who have never needed help before.

This organisation provides food support, with its food vans providing over 20,000 meals in the last year alone. The organisation also provides emergency accommodation services, disability support and helps disadvantaged children and youth.

Because of their wide range of services, this organisation needs all kinds of items to continue helping some of the state's most vulnerable (scroll down or click here to read about some of the people this organisation is currently supporting).

Their staff are seeking donations of toiletries, blankets, vouchers for shoes and towels - items that may seem basic to you, but mean everything to someone who is struggling to get from week to week.

David came in recently to ask for help for himself and his children. His wife left recently unexpectedly, withdrawing the money from their joint back account, and leaving him and their five kids. David also recently lost his job, and is unsure how to pay for rent, food and other expenses. This organisation put David in touch with a mental health counsellor and a rental assistance organsation. They've also provided him with food cards, a food hamper, and a gift card to help with school costs.

Lara moved from Western Australia to study at the University of Launceston. Upon arriving, she struggled to find stable accommodation, and was sexually and financially abused by a friend. She's been moving from hotel to hotel while studying, which takes up most of her Centrelink payment. This organisation has provided Lara with food while she navigates this tough period.

Jess has been staying in a caravan park in her tent. She's about to graduate from her court-mediated drug program as she recovers from drug addiction. She has pharmacy prescriptions that she couldn't afford, so this organisation helped cover the cost of her current medication.

Olivia lives with her mum and partner. Their rental has been sold and they had to move out, and after many unsuccessful applications, they secured a rental that costs far more than where they were living. After paying bond and a two-week deposit, they were unable to pay for groceries that week. This organisation helped them with groceries for the week.
