In the lead-up to Christmas, this Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individual experienced a sudden and traumatic separation after more than 20 years in a long-term relationship. Due to escalating domestic violence and safety concerns, they were forced to leave the family home with little notice, resulting in displacement and loss of stability.
During the period of domestic violence, money that had been carefully saved for Christmas food and basic necessities was taken from them, leaving them without funds to purchase groceries for the holiday period.
The impact on their wellbeing has been significant, with a recent hospital presentation following a mental health crisis. They continue to experience high levels of anxiety, poor sleep, and difficulty eating, making daily functioning challenging.
Access to food vouchers would provide immediate relief and support safety and stability over the Christmas period.
