A grandmother has unexpectedly become the full-time carer for her two young grandchildren, aged 9 and 6. One of the children lives with Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder and requires additional daily support and structure.
She is also caring for her adult daughter, who is only 29 and has recently received a terminal brain cancer diagnosis. With the children’s father no longer involved due to a history of family violence, the grandmother has stepped in to ensure the children are safe, supported, and loved. The family is currently working towards formalising her role as the children’s legal guardian to provide them with long-term stability.
Despite her strength and dedication, the emotional and financial pressure has become overwhelming. She is juggling medical needs, therapy appointments, and the cost of living while managing the household on a very limited income. The family is doing everything they can to stay afloat during an incredibly heartbreaking time.
