Recipient story

Assistive technology for children experiencing homelessness wanting to engage in education
Ready to Learn
GIVIT
Domestic & Family Violence
Children experiencing homelessness will experience a multitude of barriers when it comes to education. Often these children have had large gaps in their schooling when they've been unable to get to school, and this means they fall behind on essential skills such as learning. This compounds, and means learning across all subjects begins to falter. When school becomes difficult, it becomes unenjoyable, and this often leads to school refusal, and therefore bigger learning gaps. By providing access to items usually unavailable, we provide them the opportunity to enjoy school, and gain the most out of their lessons and homework, and allow school to become a protective factor in the children's lives again.

How it's helped before

[We assisted] a woman who had four children in primary school this year, she shared that she was worried about ensuring they all had what they needed and felt equally included, so the [GIVIT donations] really helped to lift that concern. Some women brought their children with them [to collect donations] and faces just lit up as they chose their lunchboxes and backpacks and packed their pencil cases.
