Recipient story
When she finally made the decision to leave, she was terrified — not just for herself, but for her two little girls, aged four and six, and the baby she was carrying. For months, she had hidden the bruises, the fear, and the constant tension that filled their small home. She would whisper to her girls that “everything’s okay,” even when it wasn’t. But deep down, she knew they deserved more than survival — they deserved safety, love, and a future.
She is a proud young First Nations woman in her mid-twenties. She has always tried to stay strong, drawing strength from her culture, her family, and her connection to Country. But when the violence escalated, she knew that if she didn’t leave soon, her children would be at risk. One night, after another frightening outburst, she packed what she could fit into a single bag — a few clothes, some snacks, and her daughters’ favourite stuffed toys and fled.
