Recipient story

Financial hardship of a single First Nations mother of 4 whose partner is currently incarcerated

First Nations Support
Domestic & Family Violence
Mother, who has 4 boys ranging from 2 to 10, escaped a significantly violent relationship with the father of her eldest two children and is concerned her ex-partner knows her home address. Mother is proud to have maintained her sobriety now for over 5 years, but her Dept of Housing home is on a street with known drug users and sellers. Mum's current partner is currently incarcerated therefore she has limited finances and is on a tight income, especially as she had an unsuccessful housing transfer a few months ago, which she handled financially on her own and mitigated successfully. Mum's older children were witness to the domestic violence she suffered in and her second eldest has been diagnosed with ADHD, with school advocating for him to also receive an ASD diagnosis. Mum self-funded this ADHD diagnosis and has been observed to always prioritise the needs of her children, enrolling them into a local football club, which has been a great outlet and place of social connection for them.
