I work for a Youth Service in the Fremantle area that supports young people who are facing homelessness.
I am currently working with two sisters who have grown up facing homelessness and experienced significant violence, neglect and adversity since childhood. The older sister has taken care of the younger one, and Child Protection has given her "parental responsibility". They have been living with an uncle - in this house the sister's face coercion, abuse and daily threats.
My service is joyed that we are able to offer the sisters a 2-bedroom transitional property while they wait for their long-term home. However, they are starting from scratch and require support to set up their new home, and make it feel safe, welcoming and secure.
Despite the adversity and challenges that they have faced, they are both engaging in education, have goals for further study, and dream of a future where they are travelling the world, working their dream jobs and live in safety.
