2026 Victoria Bushfires
The January 2026 Mt Lawson fire destroyed hectares of farming land, eradicating vital fences essential to the protection of crops, stock, and local water sources. The fires also destroyed infrastructure, feed and more.
Almost six years after the 2019/2020 fires, the January 2026 bushfire severely impacted a region still deeply traumatised from Black Summer.
In Burrowye, a family of beef cattle farmers have been nurturing their land for decades. Having legally built one of the largest in-land water reserves in the area, which is also a safe space for dozens of species of birds, their 85-90 megalitre dam was essential in saving multiple properties in January. While this family suffered the loss of fences, feed, and equipment, the biggest blow came on March 4 when a major overland flooding event turned their farm into a moonscape. 250mls of rain fell in three hours destroying their dam, wiping out fences necessary for the protection of their stock from foxes, wild dogs, and feral cats.
