Baking has been a lifelong passion and remains an important activity that supports the client's mental health, wellbeing, and sense of identity during her recovery from family violence, homelessness, and social isolation. She is an active member of her community and regularly bakes for resident gatherings and special events, often borrowing equipment to do so. These contributions foster social connection, reduce isolation among older residents, and strengthen community engagement.

68-year-old woman in community housing after escaping long-term family violence and rebuilding her life
Domestic & Family Violence
The client experienced prolonged family violence, including physical and sexual abuse, before leaving her marriage of 40 years. Following the separation, she was blamed by family members for causing conflict and subjected to significant emotional and psychological abuse. During a period of vulnerability, she was manipulated into psychiatric admissions and later became the victim of an online scam, losing her entire life savings, including proceeds from the marital home.

Her family responded with hostility, ridicule and rejection, leading to estrangement, homelessness and a severe mental health breakdown requiring hospitalisation. Since entering crisis accommodation in 2023, and later permanent community housing, she has worked hard to rebuild her life. Attempts to recover personal belongings from family members have been met with obstruction, with valuable items withheld or returned damaged, causing significant distress and re-traumatisation.
