Recipient story

Refugee Widow from Myanmar requiring sewing machine to assist with volunteering and starting business in Melbourne
GIVIT
H is a 64-year-old widowed refugee from Myanmar, arrived in Melbourne in December 2025 on a 202 humanitarian visa with her four children. Following the tragic death of her husband and the 2021 coup in Myanmar, H and her family sought refuge in India, where they sought asylum in Delhi. To support her family, she took informal cleaning jobs, due to her limited work rights and learned the local dialect, Mizou, to better communicate. Despite these challenges, H has always aspired to work as a seamstress and dreams of establishing her own sewing and clothing repair business. She also plans to volunteer and teach sewing skills to fellow Burmese refugees.

Access to a sewing machine would not only allow H to pursue her passion and entrepreneurial goals but would also significantly reduce her living expenses in Melbourne, where the cost of living is high. This would empower her to contribute more effectively to her community while securing a sustainable livelihood for her family.
