This woman in her late 60s was living on her own property, just 20 minutes from her daughter and young grandchildren. Being close by allowed her to stay actively involved in their lives and enjoy the connection that means so much to her. The January 2026 bushfires destroyed her home, forcing her and her husband to leave their property behind. They are now living in a granny flat at the back of her daughter’s home while trying to navigate what comes next.
Her husband, who is self‑employed, lost all of his tools in the fires and is currently unable to work. This has created additional financial pressure at a time when they are already facing the emotional and practical challenges of displacement. They are also struggling to secure temporary accommodation and worry they may not be able to stay close to their family if they are forced to move.
At a stage in life when they had hoped to enjoy stability and retirement, they are now faced with rebuilding and uncertainty.
