Family of 7 impacted by the Walwa Fire
2026 Victoria Bushfires
A young family moved to a family property, 5 kms from the main road and one hour drive from the nearest regional centre, to raise their 5 children and grow their beef enterprise. They built a new home and moved in. Then the bushfires came. Panic – get everyone in the car, take the dogs and get out to safety. In the rush to get to safety their thoughts turned to what they had forgotten to take, what would they find when they returned. The fires devastated the surrounding bush, their fences and their pastures. They lost cattle. Their home survived.
Three months on, the reality of those days still lingers. Having to shoot their own cattle that they had raised. The hard physical work of rebuilding fences, rebuilding relationships, rebuilding their lives. The burnt trees and bare paddocks a constant reminder of the serious threat that they faced during that time.
Approximately one thousand kms week travelled to get kids to school, go to work and shop for groceries etc. Cost of fuel!
