Using public transportation with two young children can be a stressful experience for any parent, whether it's going for shopping or a visit to the doctor. For a newly arrived refugee family, such an experience could add onto the already stressful settlement process. Trying to be attentive to the children while making a mental log of the different stops along your route or identifying some landmarks as your navigation points can be overwhelming. To further complicate the situation, try carrying one child on your arm and shopping on the other hand since the walk back home is quite long and the child is tired of walking. This is the current experience of this family, one that I believe can be changed through the support from the community. It's not about the family not doing enough, it's a product of multilayered structural systems such as the house being in the inner parts of the suburb that's inaccessible by public transportation.
