Recovering from mental health crisis through connecting with nature in fishing

Martin (*alias) was working in an office job in marketing when he began to experience chronic depression. Isolated from friends and family he became addicted to gambling. The more money he lost, the deeper his shame and depression became until his world began to crumble. He experienced a serious mental health crisis which led to an extended period of homelessness and psychiatric admission. He declared bankruptcy and lost everything. After he hit rock bottom, he slowly began his recovery. Now his mental health has stabilised, he is working to rebuild his life, in connecting with community, investigating study in a different field, and resuming activities that used to bring him joy and peace. Martin loves to sit in nature, by a river surrounded by trees and fish. A simple connection like this restores some joy in being alive.
