The hopeful recipient is a 64-year-old First Nations grandmother who is providing primary care to six of her grandchildren (ages 4 - 14), her adult daughter living with a disability, and her terminally ill husband.
Many of the recipient grandchildren are struggling with mental health challenges stemming from the trauma experiences of their early childhood. The recipient is resilient and works tirelessly to connect her grandchildren with services to improve their wellbeing, maintain her husband's medical appointments and keep her household healthy, and safe. The grandfamily is experiencing significant and ongoing financial hardship as both grandparents are unable to work due to illness and caregiving responsibilities. They are prioritising maintaining their rental payments, food, medical care, and fuel and are in desperate need of a new washing machine and dryer to keep the family clothed, warm, and healthy during winter.
