Our team are currently supporting a vulnerable older adult experiencing financial elder abuse. This person adopted her granddaughter at age five to rescue her from severe child abuse and neglect, providing dedicated care into adulthood. Due to this lifelong bond and trust, the granddaughter has managed to take advantage of her grandmother, stealing over $7,000 across seven years via subscriptions, meal deliveries, and online shopping addictions. Active investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the theft. While the grandmother understands the psychological barriers her granddaughter faces due to childhood trauma and mental health, she is deeply distressed. Whilst trying to regenerate her savings, she is finding it hard to afford food and essential items on a single pension. Her situation is critically compounded by the fact that she is blind, has a palliative cancer diagnosis and manages her own mental health from her own years of abuse being a forgotten Australian.
