First Nations Support
Many women and children come to the Women’s Refuge during the most difficult and unsafe periods of their lives. They may be escaping family and domestic violence, homelessness, financial hardship, emotional abuse, or situations where they no longer feel safe in their own home. Often, they arrive with very few belongings, carrying the emotional impact of trauma, fear, and uncertainty about the future.
For many families in the region, access to safe housing and support services can be limited due to distance, isolation, and a lack of affordable accommodation. Women may have left behind their community, employment, personal possessions, and support networks in order to protect themselves and their children. Some arrive after long journeys from remote communities with nowhere else to turn.
Children who come to refuge services are often deeply affected by the instability and trauma they have experienced.
