From Carport to Safety: Grandmother Escaping Violence Rebuilds Life While Facing Heart Surgery and Homelessness
Domestic & Family Violence
First Nations Support
Other hardship(s)
A 60-year-old Indigenous woman, mother and grandmother, is seeking urgent support as she rebuilds her life after prolonged hardship. Following two years in hospital due to a severe infection and ongoing chronic health issues, she was discharged into homelessness and is currently living in a carport. She is on a waitlist for open-heart surgery and faces significant medical expenses, while also managing trauma and fear related to a previously violent ex-partner who is soon to be released from prison.
Despite these challenges, she has recently been offered a unit, her first safe home in years but she has no belongings and must start from nothing. Living on a disability support pension, most of her income goes toward essential costs and debts she is actively trying to resolve. She has also experienced repeated theft of her few possessions.
Separated from her children and grandchildren, she is determined to rebuild stability, safety and to have a home where she can have her family visit
