Our client is a middle-aged woman living in public housing whose property was subjected to major flooding when a mains water pipe burst in her roof several weeks ago. Many items were damaged beyond repair, including her couch, freezer, rugs, clothing, shoes, bedding, curtains and kitchenware. Items she placed in plastic bags for protection have since gone mouldy due to the high level of moisture still in the property. A section of her ceiling has collapsed.
The client is on a minimal Centrelink income and struggles to make ends meet. She does not have the funds to purchase replacement items and has not been able to get any financial assistance to do so.
She continues to live in the property as repairs are slowly being undertaken. Already living quite a solitary existence, this experience has compounded her isolation and negatively impacted her mental health.
