We are currently supporting a family where both parents have been incarcerated due to drug and criminal behaviours. The grandparents have been the unofficial carers of one grandchild and two stepchildren, prior to the parents' incarceration. The grandparent has always placed the safety needs of their grandchildren as paramount, especially in relation to the children's parent's lifestyle choices. The grandparents do not receive any Centrelink Benefits for the children and are waiting on a stat dec signed by the parents for this to occur. The grandparents have also paid for outstanding childcare bills. Whilst the grandparents are happy to continue to care for the grandchildren, they have acknowledged that they have incurred substantial financial burdens as a result of caring of the children. Having some additional support would ensure the children have their needs met and the placement is stable and secure.
