A 60+ Torres Strait Islander woman is experiencing extreme financial hardship. She is currently living with cancer, receives the Disability Support Pension, and is a victim-survivor of family violence residing in social housing. Due to a recent storm surge, her 15-year-old refrigerator shorted out and is no longer functional.
The loss of a fridge has created significant health and safety concerns, particularly given, ongoing cancer treatment and medical needs, current hot weather conditions, need to safely store food and medications, Increased difficulty accessing support services during the Christmas period
She has exhausted all available options to obtain a replacement, including community services and second-hand avenues, without success. Due to her limited income and complex circumstances, she is unable to self-fund this essential item.
