Education & Training Costs – $1,600

West End QLD 4101

This request is to support an older individual experiencing ongoing financial hardship to access vocational training in dog behaviour and dog training. Due to limited income, ongoing medical costs related to a serious spinal injury, and the long-term impacts of previous housing instability, the participant is unable to self-fund the course fees. While their health has improved enough to consider returning to work, financial barriers remain a significant obstacle. These costs prevent them from enrolling in the course, despite it being scheduled to commence shortly. Without external support, the participant will be unable to access this opportunity. Funding for this training would remove a critical barrier to re-entering the workforce and enable the participant to build sustainable employment in an area they are passionate about. Completion of the course would allow them to support others by helping people better understand their dogs, strengthen human–animal bonds, and apply positive training techniques. Access to this training promotes equity by ensuring someone facing long-term disadvantage is not excluded from employment opportunities due to financial hardship. Support through GIVIT would have a meaningful and lasting impact by supporting independence, workforce participation, and long-term stability.

Recipient story

After homelessness and a serious back injury, an older man is rebuilding his life through his love of dogs.
GIVIT
After losing his home, this man endured years of hardship with only his dog by his side. A serious back injury led to multiple surgeries and lasting pain, making everyday life a struggle.

He previously served in the army reserves and has always been someone who gives back. Even now, he is known in his complex for helping others — taking out bins, checking in on neighbours, and offering kindness wherever he can.

His dog gave him comfort, purpose, and a reason to keep going. Over time, he regained stable housing and enough mobility to start again.

Now older and living with ongoing injury, finances are tight. He hopes to fund a course in dog behaviour and training so he can help others build stronger bonds with their dogs and return to the workforce doing meaningful work he loves. With support now, he has a real chance at a fresh start.
