Our program has been supporting an 18-year-old female since March 2026 as she was couch-surfing with various friends, staying a couple of night in each place. She had completed Year 12 & intended to continue with further study but had deferred this due to her current living instability. She described her family situation. They relocated to Australia several years ago after a war-torn situation in Ethiopia. There had always been housing instability & financial stress. She felt the family situation had reached a crisis point & felt she could no longer stay at home due to the emotional pressure from her mother & increasing threats of violence from her older brother. Our program supported with application for her own Centrelink payment, linked her with employment- training support & looked at possible housing options. Fortunately, in May she was able to share with a friend for a length of time until they moved into a long-term rental. But they share a single bed.
