Donations in Northern Territory
GIVIT coordinates many requests by charities operating in the NT, often in remote regions.
Keen to promote engagement with learning and education, many such requests relate to school items. In the small Aboriginal community of Barunga, southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory, GIVIT has organised donations of over 1000 items, including clothes and linen from corporate partners, and generous individual donations of women’s sports shoes. All these items make for a better school experience, helping drive engagement with education. As always with GIVIT, our donors respond to specific requests made by those operating on the ground.
Another example of generosity getting positive outcomes in the NT included a special delivery of 30 school backpacks to Pine Creek Primary School, 90km south of Darwin. The mainly indigenous students came from Pine Creek itself and its nearby communities.
The request to GIVIT was all about supporting the students with a new reading initiative: Read with Me. Already progressing well with their reading goals, the students reported their novels were too heavy for their plastic bags, with many students leaving their books at school for this specific reason!
It seems that the large colourful backpacks did their job, contributing to the initiative’s success in increasing reading rates. We were pleased to hear that many students now take books home every day. Another boost for the students soon followed, with the arrival of 14 pairs of school shoes donated by Skobi and a large supply of socks gifted by Hanes. GIVIT was once again delighted to coordinate the matching of specific local requests with our generous partners and donors.
