Celebrating 10 years of national disaster and emergency partnership

3 min read

Over the past 10 years, NRMA Insurance has stood alongside GIVIT through some of Australia's toughest moments. From natural disasters and community recovery efforts to supporting people facing hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic, their commitment has helped ensure essential support reaches Australians when and where it's needed most.

A partnership that changed everything

Ten years ago, NRMA Insurance became GIVIT's very first National Partner. It was a landmark moment that helped transform GIVIT from a Queensland-based charity into a national organisation, connecting generosity with genuine need in communities across Australia.

This year, as we celebrate a decade of partnership, we're reflecting on the incredible impact we've achieved together.

2015: Taking GIVIT National

What began in 2015 as an ambitious partnership quickly became a driving force behind GIVIT's growth.

With NRMA Insurance's support, GIVIT expanded its reach beyond Queensland, laying the foundations for a truly national organisation. The partnership helped increase awareness of GIVIT's innovative model and enabled more people experiencing hardship to access the practical items and services they urgently needed.

It was the beginning of a shared commitment to strengthening communities and helping people recover, rebuild and thrive.

2017: Expanding our reach and responding to disaster

By 2017, GIVIT had expanded into the ACT, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

That same year, Tropical Cyclone Debbie caused widespread devastation across Queensland. As communities began the long road to recovery, NRMA Insurance and GIVIT worked together to direct generosity where it was needed most, ensuring support reached people facing significant loss and hardship.

The partnership demonstrated the power of practical giving and the importance of getting the right support to the right people at the right time.

2019: Putting communities front and centre

In 2019, NRMA Insurance made an extraordinary gesture by replacing its own logo with GIVIT's on the front of the Brisbane Broncos jersey: "We are getting behind heroes of help like GIVIT who give Australians a helping hand in their time of need after a disaster. We have seen firsthand how receiving items like clean clothing and bedding following extreme weather can make a big difference to people who have been forced out of their homes. We are proud to work with the Brisbane Broncos to donate our jersey logo to our community partner GIVIT, a charity that epitomises the resilient spirit of Queenslanders.”

Juliette Wright, GIVIT Founder said: “This is an amazing opportunity to be associated with the Broncos - an iconic proudly Queensland team who help their local community. We are a proudly Queensland charity who support local communities by providing the essential items to help people get back on their feet. Just like NRMA Insurance, our work, especially following disasters, is to help Queenslanders in need and help build resilient communities in preparation for future weather events.”

NRMA Insurance supported GIVIT by raising awareness through their Broncos jersey, shown across Australia on TV, in-stadium, online and in print.

2021: Supporting communities through COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for individuals, families and communities, NRMA Insurance once again stepped up.

In partnership with RACV and GIVIT, a two-year, $2 million COVID-19 Relief Program was launched to support communities impacted by the pandemic. At a time when many individuals and families were facing financial hardship, isolation and uncertainty, the program provided practical assistance and helped meet critical community needs.

The initiative highlighted the partnership's ability to adapt and respond to emerging challenges facing people across Australian.

2022: Standing with flood-affected communities

In 2022, devastating flooding impacted communities across Queensland and New South Wales.

NRMA Insurance pledged $400,000 to support flood recovery efforts through GIVIT, helping provide practical assistance to people who had lost homes, possessions and a sense of normality.

The funding helped deliver essential goods and services to families and individuals navigating the difficult journey of recovery and rebuilding.

2022: Building resilience through innovation

The same year, IAG volunteers partnered with GIVIT to host a Hackathon during Resilience Week.

The initiative brought together passionate people focused on strengthening community resilience and improving support systems for Australians impacted by disasters and hardship.

It was a reminder that impactful partnerships are about more than funding. They are also about sharing expertise, innovation and a collective commitment to creating positive change.

2024: A new chapter in disaster preparedness and recovery

The partnership entered an exciting new chapter in 2024 with the launch of the National Disaster and Emergency Partnership between NRMA Insurance, RACV and GIVIT.

The initiative was designed to help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters, recognising the growing challenges posed by increasingly frequent and severe weather events across Australia.

By bringing together trusted organisations with a shared purpose, the partnership strengthened support for communities at every stage of the disaster cycle.

2024-25: Championing resilience conversations

Beyond disaster recovery, NRMA Insurance has also played an important role in championing conversations around resilience and community preparedness.

Through support of GIVIT's presence at the Australian Disaster Resilience Conference and Resilience Lane, the partnership has helped foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing and innovation within the resilience sector.

These initiatives continue to bring together leaders, practitioners and communities focused on creating a stronger Australia.

2025: Supporting communities after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred

In 2025, NRMA Insurance pledged $250,000 to support communities impacted by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The contribution helped ensure people affected by the disaster could access the essential goods and services they needed as they began recovering from the event's impacts.

2025: Advancing reconciliation through storytelling

During National Reconciliation Week, GIVIT and NRMA Insurance came together to host a screening of The Knowledge Keepers.

The event created an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the importance of First Nations knowledge, culture and leadership. It represented another meaningful chapter in a partnership that continues to support not only disaster resilience, but stronger and more connected communities.

The impact behind the milestones

While the milestones are impressive, the true measure of this partnership lies in the lives it has helped change.

Over the past decade, countless individuals and families have received the essential items and services they needed to get back on their feet. Whether it was furniture after a flood, technology to support children's education, or practical assistance during times of crisis, the partnership between NRMA Insurance and GIVIT has helped turn generosity into tangible outcomes.

GIVIT Founder Juliette Wright OAM said the partnership has played a pivotal role in helping the organisation grow and support more Australians experiencing hardship.

"NRMA Insurance believed in GIVIT's mission from the very beginning and helped make our national growth possible. Their support over the past decade has enabled us to reach more communities, respond to disasters across the country and deliver practical help to people when they need it most.

We're incredibly grateful for their partnership and proud of everything we've achieved together."

Looking ahead

Over the past decade, we've seen time and again what can happen when practical support reaches people at the right time. This belief has helped countless Australians access practical support during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

From disaster recovery and pandemic support to community resilience and preparedness, this partnership has made a lasting difference to people, families and communities across the country.

While we're proud of the milestones we've achieved, the real story is the thousands of Australians who have been supported to recover, rebuild and move forward.

As communities continue to face new challenges, GIVIT remains committed to ensuring generosity reaches those who need it most, helping people not just get through difficult times, but build a stronger future.
