Homeless couple were sleeping in their car before having open heart surgery
An Indigenous couple found themselves without a home due to unemployment and falling behind on rent payments. They resorted to sleeping in their car until the man developed a serious knee infection, leading to hospitalization. Unfortunately, he contracted sepsis during his hospital stay, resulting in damage to his heart valve. Recently, he underwent open heart surgery to replace the affected valve. After being discharged, he faces a three-month recovery period, during which they will continue to reside in their car.
The gentleman's partner spends her days at the hospital, sitting by his bedside while also collaborating with her support network to secure accommodation before his discharge from the hospital.
*UPDATE*
With support of their case manager, the couple have secured a transitional property where they will remain until allocation of a ACT housing property.
