The Yarning Circle - support for residents of Fitzroy Crossing and communities following the Kimberley floods of January 2023
The Kimberley region was hit hard by Ex TC Ellie which resulted in flooding which impacted towns, communities, animal sanctuaries, pastoralists and infrastructure. The bridge in Fitzroy Crossing was destroyed by the massive amounts of water and debris which came down the Fitzroy River. The flow rate reached 85000 cubic metres and has been recorded as the quickest flow rate in any river in Australia. The river reached a width of many of tens of kilometres.
Residents in Indigenous communities, Camballin and Fitzroy Crossing suffered extensive loss of homes, cars and belongings.
The Yarning Circle is designed to complement The Cuppa Circle program that goes into communities providing a safe space to sit and chat and talk about their experiences and any issues that they may be experiencing. The Yarning Circle will be a way for participants to learn a new skill, able to make practical items and gifts, and leaving participents to potentially sell their creations at the local market.
