A carer and his wife with Alzheimer’s were trapped in a high-rise for days without power, light, or access to basic supplies.
An elderly couple living in a high-rise apartment endured five days without power. One partner suffers from severe Alzheimer’s and relies completely on the other for care. With the lift out of service and only a faintly lit fire stairwell, they were trapped inside their unit. The partner with Alzheimer’s was unable to navigate the stairs, and the caregiver couldn’t leave for long to collect basic essentials like food or toilet paper. The experience was emotionally and physically exhausting, leaving them isolated and vulnerable. This situation highlights the challenges faced by people living with dementia and their carers during emergencies. They now need support to recover and to ensure they are better prepared and protected in the future.
